Moving the Needle- From John's Baptism to the Holy Spirit's Rest

Nov 23, 2025

This powerful message confronts us with a question that could transform our spiritual lives: Are we living under John's baptism or the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Drawing from Acts 19 and the story of Apollos, we're challenged to examine whether we're trapped in an exhausting cycle of striving to make ourselves worthy of God, or whether we're truly resting in the finished work of Christ. John's baptism represented repentance and preparation—constantly trying to clean ourselves up, make straight paths, and perform better. But the baptism of the Holy Spirit offers something radically different: rest, peace, and the power to truly live. The passage reveals that Apollos had knowledge, charisma, and zeal, yet something was missing until Priscilla and Aquila helped him understand the fullness of the Spirit. Similarly, the disciples in Ephesus had repented but hadn't yet experienced the transformative presence of God's Spirit. This message invites us to stop exhausting ourselves through religious performance and instead embrace the assurance, comfort, and direction that only the Holy Spirit provides. When we shift from striving to resting, the needle finally moves—both in our personal sanctification and in advancing God's kingdom. The question for each of us is simple but profound: Do we know that we know that we know the Holy Spirit dwells within us?
