Trusting God's Promises

What does it look like to trust God when everything in us wants to hold on tight and stay in control? In Genesis 13, we find Abraham at a crossroads, literally and spiritually, standing at an altar between Bethel and Ai, having just returned from a season of failure in Egypt. The story that unfolds between Abraham and his nephew Lot is more than a land dispute between herdsmen. It is a portrait of two radically different ways of living. Lot lifts his eyes and sees the well-watered plains of Jordan, lush and self-sufficient, and he takes it for himself. Abraham waits. He stands at the altar and calls on the name of the Lord until God is the one who tells him to lift his eyes. That contrast is the heartbeat of this message. We are constantly tempted to look, see, and take, just as Adam and Eve did in the garden, just as Lot did on the plain. But calling on the name of the Lord is not a small or passive act. It is an act of total surrender, a declaration of dependence that reshapes how we make decisions, pursue relationships, spend money, and navigate crisis. The promise God reaffirms to Abraham the moment Lot walks away reminds us that when we trust God enough to release control, He does not leave us empty-handed. He meets us at the altar and speaks.
