Sermon Overview
This sermon examines the story of Terah and Abraham from Genesis 11-12, exploring how men (and all believers) can connect with God's vision, avoid stopping halfway on their spiritual journey, and keep walking faithfully with God. The message challenges us to examine what keeps us from fully following where God leads.
Opening Questions (10 minutes)
- Ice Breaker: What's one journey or goal you started but never finished? What caused you to stop?
- Reflection: When you pull into your driveway after work, what thoughts typically run through your mind? Do you ever ask yourself, "Is this all life is supposed to be?"
1. Connect with Your God-Given Vision
- God gives each person a unique vision and calling
- We must intentionally create space to hear from God
- This requires getting away from the noise and demands of daily life
- Grief, comfort, and idols can cause us to stop before reaching our destination
- Terah stopped in Haran—a place that reminded him of his loss
- We must identify what spiritual battles we're losing that keep us stuck
- Following Jesus is meant to be an adventure, not a boring routine
- It's never too late to start (Abraham was 75!)
- We need to fight battles, live adventures, and pursue what God calls beautiful
Section 1: Connecting with God's Vision (15-20 minutes)
- Scripture Focus: Read 1 Kings 19:1-18 (Elijah in the wilderness)
- Why did Elijah need to get away from everyone and everything?
- What does this teach us about hearing God's voice?
- The sermon mentioned several biblical figures who went into "lonely places" to connect with God (Moses, David, Jesus).
- When was the last time you intentionally got away to pray and listen to God?
- What makes this difficult in your current season of life?
- For Men: The sermon states that men's primary task is to be connected to God's vision so they can lead their families.
- How do the constant demands of work, family, and church make this challenging?
- What would it look like for you to prioritize this connection?
- For Everyone: If Jesus needed to get away to pray, how much more do we?
- What practical steps could you take this week to create space to hear from God?
- Scripture Focus: Read Genesis 11:27-32
- What do you think caused Terah to stop in Haran instead of completing the journey to Canaan?
- How can grief cause us to stop pursuing God's vision?
- The sermon mentions three things that can cause us to stop:
- Grief/Loss (of a person, career, dream, or expectation)
- Idols (things we won't let go of)
- Comfort (settling for what's familiar and safe)
- Which of these resonates most with your current situation? Why?
- Self-Examination: "When you stop halfway on the journey God has for you, there is one question you need to ask yourself: What spiritual battle am I losing?"
- Take a moment of silence for personal reflection on this question
- (Optional sharing) Would anyone be willing to share what God is revealing?
- The sermon mentions "teraphim" (household gods/idols) that Terah couldn't let go of.
- What are modern-day "teraphim" that keep people stuck?
- What might be your "household gods" that you need to release?
- Scripture Focus: Read Joshua 24:2-3 and Matthew 4:18-22
- What similarities do you see between God's call to Abraham and Jesus's call to the disciples?
- What did both calls require people to leave behind?
- The sermon states: "Walking with Jesus is supposed to be the adventure of your lifetime."
- Does your spiritual life feel more like an adventure or a routine? Why?
- What would need to change for it to feel more like an adventure?
- For Parents: The sermon asks, "Will your children have to leave you in order to walk with God?"
- What does this question mean to you?
- How can parents model walking with God rather than stopping halfway?
- Abraham was 75 years old when he finally left Haran to follow God's call.
- What excuses do you make about being too old, too young, too busy, or too far behind?
- How does Abraham's example challenge those excuses?
Individual Reflection
Take 3-5 minutes of silent reflection on these questions:
- Vision: What vision has God given me that I've been ignoring or delaying?
- Halfway Point: Where have I stopped halfway in my spiritual journey? What caused me to stop?
- Idols: What am I holding onto that's keeping me from fully following God?
- Next Step: What is one concrete action I can take this week to start walking with God again?
Invite group members to share (without pressure):
- One area where they feel stuck halfway
- One practical step they're committing to this week
Choose one or more to commit to this week:
For Everyone:
- [ ] Schedule a specific time this week to get alone with God (no phone, no distractions)
- [ ] Identify one "idol" or comfort you're holding onto and ask God to help you release it
- [ ] Journal about this question: "What spiritual battle am I losing that's keeping me stuck?"
- [ ] Go for a walk in nature with the specific purpose of listening to God
- [ ] Plan a time to get away (even for a few hours) to pray and seek God's vision for your life and family
- [ ] Have a conversation with your spouse about creating regular space for spiritual connection
- [ ] Ask yourself: "If my children follow my example, will they be following God?"
- [ ] Plan an outdoor activity with your family that gets everyone out of routine
- [ ] Consider planning a group retreat or day away for prayer and seeking God together
- [ ] Commit to checking in with one another next week about your action steps
- [ ] Pray for one another regarding specific areas where you've stopped halfway
Prayer Prompts:
- Pray for vision: Ask God to reveal His specific vision for each person's life
- Pray for freedom: Ask God to break the power of idols, grief, and comfort that keep us stuck
- Pray for courage: Ask for the boldness to leave behind what's familiar and follow Jesus
- Pray for fathers: That they would lead their families in walking with God
- Pray for adventure: That our spiritual lives would come alive with purpose and joy
For Next Week
Assignment: Come prepared to share:
- What happened when you created space to listen to God this week
- One way you took a step forward in your spiritual journey
- Any new insights God gave you about His vision for your life
Leader Notes
- Be Sensitive: This sermon may touch on deep areas of grief, disappointment, or failure. Create a safe space for vulnerability.
- Don't Rush: If the group needs more time on certain questions, allow the Spirit to lead.
- Model Vulnerability: As the leader, be willing to share your own struggles with stopping halfway.
- Follow Up: Consider reaching out to group members during the week, especially those who shared vulnerable situations.
- Gender Dynamics: While the sermon focuses on men/fathers, ensure women in the group feel included and valued in the discussion.
