Answering God's Command to Go
5-Day Devotional: Leaving Behind to Follow Forward
Day 1: The Call to Go
Reading: Genesis 12:1-4
Devotional: God's call to Abraham was radical: leave everything familiar and go to an unknown place. This wasn't just about geography; it was about trust. Abraham had to release his grip on security, inheritance, and comfort to receive God's promise. Today, God still calls His people to go—not necessarily across oceans, but beyond our comfort zones. What are you clinging to that prevents you from fully following God? Perhaps it's a career path you've chosen without consulting Him, a relationship that keeps you from His best, or simply the safety of staying where you are. Before God shows you where, He asks for your yes. Will you trust Him enough to let go? The blessing isn't found in staying put; it's discovered in obedient movement toward God's purposes.
Day 2: The Pattern of Jesus
Reading: Philippians 2:5-11
Devotional: Jesus had every reason to stay in heaven's glory, yet He left His Father's house to fulfill God's mission on earth. If the Son of God didn't cling to comfort and privilege, what makes us think we should? Christ's example establishes the pattern for all believers: we leave behind lesser things to gain greater purposes. This isn't about geographic relocation alone; it's about surrendering our will, our plans, and our self-determined futures. Jesus went from glory to a manger, from carpenter's shop to cross, from tomb to resurrection. Each movement was obedience. Where is Jesus calling you to leave your comfort today? What inheritance from your earthly father are you prioritizing over your Heavenly Father's call? Remember, Jesus made His name great by going, not staying.
Day 3: Permission to Stay or Command to Go?
Reading: Matthew 28:18-20
Devotional: The Great Commission doesn't ask if we'd like to go; it commands us to go. Yet many Christians live as if they need God's permission to stay rather than His direction on where to go. We rationalize our stationary lives with spiritual-sounding excuses, but the truth remains: God's Word never tells anyone to simply stay put. Whether you cross the street or cross an ocean, the question is the same: are you going where God shows you? This requires daily surrender, asking God what He wants you to do with your career, your family, your resources, and your time. Stop waiting for a dramatic call and start moving in obedience to what He's already revealed. The Holy Spirit guides those who are walking, not those who are sitting still.
Day 4: The Blessing of Obedience
Reading: Genesis 12:2-3; Galatians 3:6-9
Devotional: God's promise to Abraham wasn't just for Abraham—it was for all nations. When Abraham obeyed and went, he became a channel of blessing to the entire world. Through his lineage came Jesus Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise. Your obedience isn't just about your personal blessing; it's about becoming a blessing to others. When you go where God sends you, you carry His presence, His truth, and His love to people who desperately need it. God promises to make your name great, not through self-promotion, but through faithful obedience. He will bless those who bless you and oppose those who oppose you. But none of this happens if you stay in your father's house, clinging to earthly inheritance. Step out in faith, and watch God multiply your impact beyond what you could imagine.
Day 5: Saying Yes Before Knowing Where
Reading: Hebrews 11:8-10
Devotional: Abraham's faith is commended because he obeyed and went, "even though he did not know where he was going." This is the essence of biblical faith: saying yes to God before He reveals the full plan. We want the roadmap before we start the journey, but God asks for trust before clarity. He wants your yes on the table before He shows you where. This feels risky because it is risky—to our flesh. But to our spirit, it's the safest place to be: fully surrendered to God's will. What if you stopped negotiating with God about the details and simply said, "Here I am, send me"? What if you released your grip on comfort, reputation, and security, trusting that God's promises are better than anything you could secure for yourself? The adventure of faith begins with a yes. Will you give Him yours today?
